Crooked River Counseling Services Origin Story

Crooked River Counseling was created by Allyssa Powers in 2020. Allyssa knew as soon as she graduated from Kent State University that she wanted to work exclusively in private practice. She worked for a counseling practice called Healing Strides Counseling Services in downtown Kent for her first few years as a new clinician.

Healing Strides is where Allyssa learned more about the business side of therapy and she fell in love with it. That is when the idea for Crooked River Counseling Services was born. Allyssa knew she wanted her practice to be in Akron since that is the community she is passionate about serving. Allyssa learned how to set up an LLC and a website and then Crooked River Counseling Services was born.

Allyssa knew she loved working with her young adult and college student clients more than any other demographic. That is why Crooked River focuses so much on the young adult population and their needs. Allyssa is passionate about creating a warm and inviting environment in her counseling sessions. She is also passionate that her office is a safe space for the LGBTQ+ community. 

The reasoning behind naming the practice Crooked River Counseling Services was a way to pay homage to the Akron area. The “crooked river” is another name for the Cuyahoga River. The river has caught on fire from how much pollution we have in the Cleveland area, but the river still survives. Fittingly, the owner of Crooked River Counseling Services came up with the name with her friend while hiking alongside the Cuyahoga River.
