Meet Allyssa Powers M.Ed LPCC-S

Hi! I am so glad you landed on my page. I am Allyssa Powers and I am a mental health therapist located in Akron, Ohio! I am passionate about my work with young adults. I understand the struggles of learning how to “adult” and figure out what you want your future to look like. Young adulthood can be a scary time, but it is also a beautiful time where you are setting yourself up for what you want the rest of your life to look like. I believe that my role as a counselor is to guide you in meeting your own goals.

Counseling Specialties

I have worked all types of client concerns, however I have a few areas that I feel VERY skilled and confident in.

  • Anxiety
  • Teens
  • Depression
  • Coping Skills
  • Young adult & College students
  • LGBTQ+ & Gender
  • Religious Trauma
  • Trauma
  • Boundaries
  • Family issues

My Counseling Approach

The approach I take in session differs based off of the concerns my client is presenting with. I always work from a person centered therapy technique, which says that the client is the ultimate authority on themselves. I try my best to be an unbiased sounding board for my clients to express their greatest hopes and biggest fears. I also use a combination of cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, mindfulness and motivational interviewing techniques.

Three main indicators of Person Centered Therapy:

  1. Unconditional positive regard, which means therapists must be empathetic and non-judgmental and be able to convey their feelings of understanding, trust, and confidence that encourage their clients to make their own decisions and choices.
  2. Empathetic understanding, which means therapists do their best to completely understand and accept their clients’ thoughts and feelings.
  3. Congruence, which means therapists have no authority or professional superiority over their clients, but instead present their true and accessible self that clients can see is honest and real.
